What’s Behind India’s Drop in Foreign Tourist Arrivals?
India is yet to reach its Pre-Covid peak of Tourist Arrival in India.
Traffic in India usually peaks in December with Dec 2017, 18, 19 fairing at 1.2m arrivals. Numbers in 2022, 2023 were ~15-20% lower than all time peaks.
During December 2024 the media outlets were sharing how Goa was virtually empty. As per CEIC 8.5 million foreign tourists visited Goa in 2019 while this number was 1.5 million in 2023.
What could be a possible reason?
The direct answer for this is the reduction in global promotion which was slashed by 97% to Rs. 3 Crore (earlier Rs. 33 Cr) for campaigns like “Incredible India”
The share for Domestic tourism is around Rs. 177 Cr.
Does that mean domestic tourism is increasing?
While the numbers are volatile currently, the focus on spiritual tourism is something to watch out for.
Estimates suggest that the contribution of the Travel and Tourism sector to India’s GDP will reach 7.6% by 2034 (6.9% Pre-Covid) and all the factors currently point towards this delta coming in majorly from domestic tourism.
